Minnesota Board of School Administrators Approves Continuing Education for Web-based Training on Autism for Teachers

LAKEWOOD, Colo., Dec. 13, 2011 — Colorado-based AutismPro is seeking to increase the number of teaching professionals who receive autism education to build capacity and competency.

The number of school-age children diagnosed with autism in Minnesota is growing. State statistics show the number of school age children with autism sharply increased over the last 10 years. In 2000, 2.5 percent of students who received special education services in Minnesota had autism. In 2009, that number grew to over 10 percent.

According to a 2009 report by the Minnesota Senate Autism Task Force, in 2008: “The state total for individuals (birth-21 years) who were identified as meeting the Special Education eligibility requirements for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), was 12,704. This is an increase over the previous year and the percent of increase in each of the past 5 years has been between 12-17%.”

The same Senate task force report noted that many education professionals feel schools should provide more training to help teachers and paraprofessionals meet the special needs of this growing student population.

“That’s exactly what we hope to help with in Minnesota,” said Dean Hannaford, Implementation Manager for AutismPro, a web-based autism training solution. “AutismPro helps districts build overall capacity by providing both training and support tools and putting them in the hands of the staff that work with the students with ASDs and other developmental delays.”

AutismPro offers web-based workshops to expand the number of staff that can receive special autism training. In November 2011, the Minnesota Board of School Administrators approved AutismPro for 40 hours of continuing education per teacher. Teachers who complete the workshops can earn credits towards their annual professional development requirements.

Created by experienced educators and behavior experts, AutismPro provides 36 workshops in seven different courses: Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders; Topics for General Education Teachers; Introduction to Behavior Management; Managing Challenging Behaviors; Special Topics in Autism; Improving Social Skills; and Improving Learning and Independence.

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. ASDs are the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Students with ASDs typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

AutismPro is the first web-based autism training solution endorsed by the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE). Product information and free product trials are available by contacting Dean Hannaford: 917-763-8736 or by email
